What is life coaching?

Put simply, life coaching is about helping you to find out what you really want from life and then helping you to achieve it and sustain it. It is not about giving you quick-fixes.

I believe that successful coaching means helping you to understand yourself better, to sort out what might be holding you back, to open your eyes to your real potential, to help you see possibilities, to identify ways forward, to tackle any real or perceived obstacles and to enable you to become motivated to start making the changes that will make the difference in your life.

Who will benefit from life coaching?

Anyone who wants to make changes in their life and needs some guidance and support in achieving it. You may want an improved quality of life, a better work/life balance or a greater sense of fulfillment or satisfaction.

Or you might want to work on a specific issue such as:
  1. becoming more assertive:

  2. improving your self-confidence;

  3. resolving relationship difficulties;

  4. overcoming procrastination;

  5. stress management;

  6. improving your time management;

  7. returning to work;

  8. changing your career.

Getting the most out of life coaching

Change will only take place when you make it happen. Going through this process is likely to present some tough challenges that will require effort, determination, courage and confidence on your part but the rewards will be worthwhile. My part, as life coach, is to support you on your journey, to listen to you, not judge you, encourage and motivate you, to give you honest feedback and to celebrate your successes with you.

How long does life coaching take?

That really depends upon you and the complexity of what you want to achieve.

How does it work?

Face to face life coaching

I prefer to see all my coaching clients face to face for the first few sessions as I find this helps to develop a more open, trusting and productive working relationship. Sessions last one hour and are held at my office in Plympton, Plymouth.

Once we have established a good working relationship, you may choose to continue meeting face to face or you may prefer to opt for telephone coaching.

Telephone life coaching

Telephone coaching sessions last 30 minutes each and are generally scheduled 3 to 4 times a month. In addition, included within the fee for telephone coaching, are emails and brief telephone calls on an as needed basis.

Life coaching or counselling?

Whereas counselling clients seek counselling because they have a problem that is causing them distress and is affecting their general wellbeing, coaching clients, who may also be seeking solutions to problems, are less likely to be in distress and more likely to be looking to enhance an area of their life. You could say that coaching clients choose to work with a coach because they want to rather than need to.

That said, occasionally during coaching an issue might be unearthed that prevents a client from moving forward. If this happens, counselling may be appropriate. The advantage of having a coach who is also a counsellor, is that the coaching work can be put on hold whilst any counselling needs are addressed. Coaching can then be resumed later once the issue has been resolved.

Confidentiality

Everything you discuss during your life coaching sessions will remain confidential, unless expressly permitted by you in writing or as required by law.
